The 273-acre East Metropolitan Park is a multiple-use recreational area with recreational facilities financed with voter-approved park bonds to include: two multi-use sport fields, four youth baseball fields, three adult baseball field, four soccer fields (with two practice fields), one covered basketball court, age-appropriate playscapes, concessions facilities, restrooms, hiking trails, and three ponds that will support catch-and-release and catch-and-keep fishing programs.
East Metropolitan Park also includes a swimming pool, a first for the Travis County Parks Division. Travis County will lease the park’s pool facility to the YMCA of Austin, who will manage pool operations, provide certified lifeguards, and pool programming, i.e., swimming lessons and physical fitness. The pool operates Memorial Day through Labor Day. More information about the pool can be obtained at the YMCA website: www.austinymca.org.
The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) Inland Fisheries Division Neighborhood Fishing Program (NFP) expanded to the Austin metropolitan area in 2008 with the introduction of Bullfrog Pond in Travis County’s East Metro Park. Due to the tremendous success, in 2015 the program was added to Kingfisher Pond, a 2 acre pond located in East Metro Park.
The general goal of the NFP is to provide fishing opportunities in all Texas urban areas, with an emphasis on youth participation. TPWD has partnered with Travis County parks to provide a quality fishing experience at these ponds. The ponds have excellent bank access and a state-of-the-art fishing pier. The TPWD Inland Fisheries Division provides fisheries management expertise and fish for regular stockings. The fish-stocking plan consists of bi-weekly stockings of channel catfish or rainbow trout. Channel catfish (12 inches) are stocked from April through November and rainbow trout (8-12 inches) December through March. Visitors over 17 years of age must have a valid Texas fishing license.
A valid freshwater fishing license is required to fish Bullfrog and Kingsfisher Pond unless you are exempt. Fishing is by pole and line only. There is no minimum length limit and a 5 fish daily bag limit per angler for channel catfish. There is no minimum length limit and a 5 fish daily bag limit per angler for rainbow trout.
